I have two stories to share that stand out and humbly filled my heart with reward and thankful pride yesterday.
While at the Country Farmers Market two different people approached me and said “I have to tell you a story…
The first story, a woman approached with a smile and said “Do I have a story for you!” and she new exactly what she wanted. As she filled her arms with the large size of detangler she shared with me that her grand daughter has beautiful long hair and is autistic. Her grand daughter cannot handle the feeling of brushing her hair very well at all and the tangles make it a daily struggle. She said the detangler changed their life and she thanked me so much for making this product… they have tried many detanglers and hair products for years and this one hit a home run! Her grand daughter loves the feel and the scent and it detangles so well to make hair brushing a postive experience now. (This means so much to me to help somone with a daily struggle
The second story, a woman and her husband stopped and and she held out her hands and said, “Do you remember me?” I was quickly recalling people from past market days and she was familier from a few weeks ago. Her hands had been so dry and cracked they were peeling and bleeding. She said she had Eczema and she suffers terribly from it for many years. The hands she held out yesterday were beautiful! They were smooth, clear and soft. I held her hands looking at them and told her how beautiful they looked. Tears welled up in her eyes and she hugged me and thanked me for making such a big difference in her life. She had been using my Hand & Body Creme No. 07 and her hands do not hurt anymore and she said she’s not embarrassed to have people see her hands. She purchased 3- 16 oz. Sweetgrass Mint Berry Blend Hand & Body Creme’s. Her quiet husband even said, “This is unbelievable because we have tried everything for her hands” As she left with her bag of hand cream, she looked like she won the lottery. https://ranchlifenaturals.com/…/hand-body-creme-no-07-wild…/
I have to admit tears welled up in my eyes with a feeling of humble reward. It means so much to make a positive difference in someone’s life. It truly makes all the work worth while.
Ranch Dog Treats are definately Veterinarian & Lilly, the veterinarian’s dog, approved!! Thank you for everything you do Abby. I just love Lilly pants. Lilly is 15 years young, deaf and one of the cutest dogs ever. While she was patiently waiting for Abby to finish up caring for one of our horses, I gave her a little treat.
Our Ranch Dog Treats are now available in Hayward, WI at Leading Edge Veterinary Care Clinic. They have all 5 flavors!
You can also order on line if you are not near Hayward.
Our Ranch Dog Treats are 100% natural with no preservatives and every little treat is packed with nutrients that has health benefits from flax, chai, honey and other nutritional ingredients for your dog. My thoughts are, if I’m going to feed a treat, why not feed one that is more than a reward. The regular treats are 16 oz. bags with approx. 120 treats per bag and they are about the size of a quarter. The training treats are approx 350 treats to a bag and 3/4″ long. Our dogs love all these treats!
I’m sharing this to help horse owners who live in areas where ticks are to be aware… Yesterday morning RBD Callista Dae Dun, our 2 year old Moriesian filly was not herself. More quiet than usual if that’s possible… I could tell she didn’t feel good and noticed her standing with the others around the hay, but not eating. I took her temp and it was 103. Her blood test reveals tick born pathogens anaplasma. She is being treated with an antibiotic and should be fine because we caught this early, however, untreated can be fatal. Check your horses for ticks.
Special thanks to Dr. Abagail for taking such good care of Callista.
This is exactly why I developed a “Tick &n Insect Repellent” as part of Ranch Life Naturals product line. 25 gallons arrived a few days ago and my bottles are being labeled as I type. I hope to have it available in a few weeks.
Our Tick & Insect Repellent is human grade and can be used for people, horses and dogs. I have found it to repel the ticks for about 3 days or so on our dogs. It is a product that is safe and natural and will need to be reapplied. I hope to have it available the beginning of August.
A friend brought her lab out to the ranch last week with a bad case of hot spots. Poor boy… he had been treated by the vet with steroids, antibiotics and topical spray and was not responding well. After just 7 days of our Original Skin Repair No. 01 he is getting some relief.
The Country Lane Farmers Market in Barron, WI was a hit! We met a lot of neat people from all walks of life and sales exceeded my expectation! My sister, Misty, was so much help packing, setting up and selling products. I’m so thankful she was with me for our first Ranch Life Naturals outing. We are planning to be at the market every Thursday throughout the summer unless it’s raining. I would love to meet you and there are so many different things there. Produce, homemade crafts, jewelry, toys, art and fresh baked goods along with home made ice cream and other food vendors. Every Thursday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Growing long manes and tails seems easy for some and is an ongoing battle for others. As a breeder and owner of Morgan horses, Moriesians and Friesian horses, there are a few things I would like to share with you about growing long manes and tails.
- First of all I need to share that genetics does play a role in growing long manes and tails. Have you ever seen an appaloosa with a mane and tail like a Friesian? I haven’t… unless it’s a cross… So, that being said, horses can only grow manes and tails as long as their genetics will allow. After considering the role of genetics, there are definately some other variables to consider when trying to grow beautiful manes and tails. You may have a horse that can grow a long mane and tail genetically, however, there are some underlying issues where the mane just seems to get never grow long.
The second important element in horse hair health is nutrition. A horse needs good nutrition to have healthy hair.
The third part that plays a role in long manes and tails is environment. Check your horses’ paddock for places that he/she can snag their manes and tails on including fencing, shelters and feeders. Some times it’s just their routine that is snagging the hair.
The fourth part is mane and tail rubbing. This part can be a nightmare if you cannot get it under control. They can start out by itching a bug bite and it can turn into a bald spot that is inflamed and sore from rubbing and then they are itching from rubbing. Be sure to keep your horse’s underbelly, sheath or udder, and fold between the hind legs clean! Horses will rub themselves trying to get to these places they cannot reach. Identifying allergy problems and treating them is your best defense against allergy rubbing.
Here are some of the things that I do to promote long, thick manes and tails:
Do not brush the mane and tail every day! When you brush every day you are pulling out too much hair and the mane and tail can become thin. Apply detangler and finger comb it to keep the knots at a minimum. I do braid on occassion, however, use caution to not braid too tight as it will break the hair near the roots and depending on where your horse lives, be aware of anything your horse can catch their braids on and tear the hair out. Braiding can also cause a horse to rub, however, properly kept braiding and protecting hair with mane and tail bags can also promote longer hair. If you do braid and use a tail bag, be sure to leave a section of hair down for fly swishing. In general with most of our horses I leave the hair down and natural and just apply detangler regularly. It is less work and uncomplicated.
Use a detangler! Before combing through the mane or tail, spray a good detangler free of silicone on the hair. Work it in with your hands and then gently comb through to get the bigger tangles out before brushing with your mane and tail brush. (The silicone in most detanglers are not good for hair. It is like a plastic coating on the hair and attracts buildup and can weaken hair and cause breakage) I spray ourOriginal Detangler (silicone free and human grade) on our horses manes and tails weekly as maintenance to help keep the hair tangle free.
Use quality grooming brushes and combs! Use combs and brushes that have smooth teeth for combing and brushing through manes and tails. Do not use brushes that will scratch the skin or break the hair. A wide toothed pick with detangler spray works well and technique is important. Always start at the ends of the hair and work up the mane and tail for the most gentle effective way to detangle without hair loss and breakage. Be gentle.
Thorough brushing to the skin is important! Do not do this every day… I try to do this weekly. When thoroughly brushing out the mane and tail, be sure to take the time to massage the teeth of the brush on the skin at the base of the mane and down to the tail bone. Massaging the skin helps stimulate blood circulation which promotes hair growth and helps to carry the natural oils throughout the mane and tail.
Use Original Skin Repair No. 01 if your horse is rubbing! I developed this product especially to stop rubbing and promote the growth of long manes and tail. If your horse is rubbing her mane and/or tail apply this product by pumping it down into the skin and working it in with your hand and and you can brush it through the hair as well. Our skin repair product is a unique formula blending botanicals, essential oils and extracts that promotes skin repair and supports hair regrowth with properties that are naturally anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal & anti-viral.
Bathe your horse with a good shampoo and conditioner! A good bath on occassion is great for your horse hair health. Take care not to bathe too often as it can dry out their skin and cause itching. In addition, be sure to thoroughly rinse the shampoo from your horses hair and apply conditoner generously to condition hair and skin to help prevent itching. I use our Original Shampoo and Conditioner that is natural and human grade. It works great, nourishes hair and skin and rinses out nicely.
Trim the tail if needed. Several of our horses grow thier tails so they are touching the ground. This can cause a thinning tail as they will step on it when they back up or when they get up from laying down. I trim the tails to be a few inches from the ground to help keep a full tail.
Fly control is important to promote long manes and tails. It’s impossible to eliminate all flies, however, keeping the fly population down does help with swishing and rubbing. We use fly predators and our natural tick and insect repellant to help with insect control.
Happy Growing Long Manes and Tails! I hope some of the information I shared can help you achieve a long mane and tail with your equine partner.
Best Grooming wishes,

Ranch Life Naturals Original Skin Repair No. 01 stops mane and tail rubbing, repairs skin and promotes hair regrowth! I worked on this for over a year to develop a natural product that smells good, is not greasy, calms skin, and stimulates hair growth so our world can be full of horses with beautiful manes and tails.”
The viscosity is thin, creamy and smooth. It is easy to dispense from the spout down to the roots of the mane and tail. I pump the product down the top of the neck at the base of the mane and massage in with my fingers, spray my Detanger on and brush gently. I also part the hair on the tail in several areas and pump along the tail bone and massage the cream over the whole tail bone.
The horses will feel just the slightest tingly feeling only momentarily as the product absorbs into the skin and begins to work. The product is at work bringing blood to the area to begin the healing process.
This product is human grade and I put it on my hair roots too!
Ranch Life Naturals Outlaw Thieves Blend

We had seen several Thieves bacteria tests being shared around facebook with petri dishes and decided to try our own lab bacteria test to see how our Outlaw Thieves cleaner recipe stands up to the leading brands of cleaner.
Thumbs up for Outlaw Thieves!!
We are offering our Outlaw Thieves essential oil blend along with an essential oil safe bottle with a stylish sticker that you can mix your own blend in and write your recipe on the sticker.
My recipe is:
The legendary story behind the band of Thieves is an interesting tale! While there are a few versions of the story they all surround one event, the Bubonic Plague. During the 15th century Europe was absolutely ravaged by the bubonic plague known as black death. As the plague claimed victim after victim, a band of thieves took to the streets. Fearlessly they pillaged and plundered the bodies of the dead, seemingly immune to the deathly disease that had claimed the lives of those they were robbing.
Daily they dodged being caught by the king’s men, until one day they finally lost their luck and were brought before the king. The legend goes that the king and his judges were shocked by the indifference towards becoming infected and the apparent immunity to it that this wily crew of outlaws showed. It’s interesting to note here that, during this time writings suggest physicians were seen wearing long black robes, wide brimmed hats, and masks that appeared to have a beak. The masks were said to have contained a combination of herbs and essential oils that the physicians would breathe in order to keep themselves safe from those afflicted with the illness. Their long black robes were also said to be doused in a similar fragrant concoction and current research continues to build upon this theory. So, they struck a deal: give us your secret and walk free.
The thieves divulged they had been using a concoction that protected them from the sickness. This now legendary blend of the thieves was rosemary, lemon, clove and cinnamon, and Eucalyptus. They used it to wield against one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. Hence the story of Outlaw Thieves.
The very first product I custom formulated was the Original Skin Repair No. 01. I was determined to develop an all natural product that would be applied to horses skin to stop itching and rubbing. There are so many reasons why horses rub themselves… everything from allergies, parasites, tick and insect bites to wax buildup between mares teats, wax build up on gelding and stallions sheath. Sometimes horses rub a little and then it turns into a lot because the rubbing made the issue worse and now the skin is itchy from rubbing, and it becomes a vicious cycle. When you have a horse with a thick beautiful long mane and tail and they start rubbing it off, your heart sinks and suddenly black beauty looks like he/she has not been cared for.
In my vision to create something that worked much better than what I was using, that wasn’t greasy, and smelled good instead of like creosote, and it would be all natural and safe for people too. I spent 1 1/2 years formulating our Original Skin Repair No. 01 product to perfect just the right combination of ingredients.
I used it on our herd with great results for many different things and discovered it worked exceptionally well, and for skin issues on dogs and people too. After we tested in out and truly felt it could help others, we sent our product out to 45+ people globally to test on a variety of different skin problems. The feedback and results was simply amazing! My skin repair product was born and it was helping horses, dogs and people from all walks of life. This journey is only just beginning, and the reward of hearing the stories of how our Original Skin Repair No. 01 helps better lives just fills my heart with happiness. So, it is with great pride I introduce to you our very first product…

Hello and Welcome,
I am so happy you have found us. Allow me to introduce myself … Sue Olson, the founder of Ranch Life Naturals, and “The Cowgirl behind the dream.” Born and raised with horses and cattle in the Midwest, I have had a passion for horses my whole life. Growing up on a dairy farm with my parents and my sister, we were always racing around the farm bareback on a horse. I have lived and breathed horses for 47 years. Later in life I met and married my soul mate and love of my life, Derrick. Blended we have 3 children and together we developed a Morgan horse breeding program known as Rafter Bar D Morgans. We stand 3 breeding stallions, 15 mares, and we raise foals every year here at the ranch. Our foals that carry the RBD prefix span the globe with foals throughout the United States, France, Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, Austria, Puerto Rico, and Australia.
Our ranch life of raising foals, making all our own hay crops, and working with young stock training, combined with my experience in the beauty industry for 15 years lends a hand in the development of the product line. Hair and skin that is out in the elements requires extra care to prevent dryness, cracking, and breaking. Many of the grooming products used for horses, dogs and people contain harsh chemicals that are not healthy for us or the environment. I have used many different products over the years for our horses, dogs and myself. Finding products to fit my needs for our lifestyle at the ranch has challenged me for years.
The inspiration to develop Ranch Life Naturals has been growing in my heart for a number of years, and because of our own needs here at the ranch and the limited products available, our journey began.
Our product line is crafted with natural and organic ingredients designed especially for the needs of horses, dogs and the people who love and work with them. Working and living out in the elements in the northern Midwest of Wisconsin, we understand how harsh the weather can be on hair and skin of horses, dogs and people. The country ranch life in extreme weather conditions along with wood ticks and a variety of biting flies has led to the development of hair and skin products that has been formulated for those who work hard, play hard and live a blessed life in the presence of the beautiful elements of nature.
We are pproud to offer the Ranch Life Naturals product line that is made right here in the USA. Our products are developed especially for the folks just like you and I in our communities who work hard and have an interest in natural healthy alternatives that are environmentally friendly.
Our only product that is not made in the USA is our brushes and combs. To our knowledge, quality wooden horse brushes are not made in the USA, so in search of brushes that fit our needs and compliment our product line, we found the quality hand crafted Borstiq brushes, hand made in Sweden, and Widu combs and brushes hand crafted in Italy, to be beautifully finished and of highest quality.
Our product line reflects the quality and style of ranch life and people who work with their hands, love and live outdoors. Our products harken back to a western ranch lifestyle where ways are simple and natural. Derrick and I both aspire to the nastalgia of the old west and although we are located in northern WI, tending our little ranch nestled in the great north woods, a part of our hearts will always be claimed by the big sky country out west.
We take pride in creating and developing products that are all natural, cruelty free, environmentally friendly and hand made in small batches right here in the USA.
The seed that germinated Ranch Life Naturals lies in a chapter of the journey that Derrick and I share together.
In 2006 Derrick survived an aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection after being air lifted to Abbot Northwest in MN for a 7 hour surgery. Less than 1% survive, and half of the survivors live about 2 weeks and from there half can live up to 10 years. Today the doctors tell us Derrick is a medical anomaly. He has been part of a study since 2006 to help doctors learn more about aortic dissection to be able to help others, as only a few survive from such a severe dissection. He has an artificial St. Judes heart value and a dacron aortic arch. After open heart surgery, recovering from a stroke and 1 liter of fluid around his heart, just 3 short months later, we discovered that Derrick also had colon cancer. After a resection to remove the cancer and a lot of prayer, with the life challenges that we were given, we know for sure that God wasn’t ready for him. Derrick is the strongest man I know with with the will and strength to live like no other. I am so blessed to walk this journey holding the hand of a gift from God.
When survival comes against all odds, so does change and research. What we put in and on our bodies and the animals we love became more important than ever. We still enjoy treats, live our life to the fullest and make each day count. We do our small part to make a difference in this world by developing all natural safe products that will help you on your journey through life. Thank you for taking time to find out about us. We hope you find some of our products will suite your needs, help you or inspire you.
Sue & Derrick
