This last week was quite an adventure. Many people have been following, however, if you didn’t know about Raphael, he’s one of our foals that was injured (we think he was stepped on) and had a displaced joint in his lower leg and needed surgery. We drove 5 hours down to Turtle Valley Equine Hospital where Raphael underwent a 2 hour surgery. The bones were fused together with a plate and screws. He came through surgery like a champ.
Prognosis is good if we can get through the next 8 weeks being calm and clean as possible to avoid infection and allow for healing. Raphael does have a cast on for the first two weeks, and he has to stay in a 16 x 16 stall and stay as calm as possible. After 2 weeks we still need to be calm as possible with a wrap on and will be stalled with gradual turnout into a small area.
I mixed up a special Hand & Body Creme No. 07 Wild Custom blend that I have been applying to his forehead and nose morning and night to help keep him calm. I used Lavender, Frankincense & Roman Chamomile. I love this blend and I do believe it is helping him to stay calm and rest.
